Condensation particle counters or Nano particle counters operate by drawing in an aerosol sample continuously though a heated saturator. Inside the alcohol or water is vaporized and diffuses into the sample stream. The aerosol sample saturated with the liquid vapor becomes supersaturated and ready to condense.

Particles present in the sample stream serve as a condensation area for the alcohol vapor. Particles quickly grow into large alcohol droplets and pass though an optical detector where they are counted.
