Barry’s Particle counter experience in the cleanroom industry is best described as pioneer. Barry Kitchener has been designing and building cleanrooms since the early 1980s. This is pretty much the entire duration of the cleanroom industry since the beginning of what we know as the modern particle counter. As the microprocessor was developed in the early 80s, it was paralleled by the development of the particle counter as well as the cleanroom. As laser optics improved, particle counters became smaller, more accurate and affordable. With improved ability to monitor cleanroom particulate contamination, it became possible to quantify the quality of a cleanroom.
Barry Kitchener’s years as a cleanroom designer and contamination control professional eventually led him to the position of President of the IEST (Institute of Environmental Sciences and Technology). This is the group responsible for writing United States Federal Standard 209E, which provides cleanroom specifications and guidllines for testing and certifying.
